Be Warned:

This website encourages you to play responsibly by betting within your limits and by recognizing that over time the house will come out ahead.

I think you will have guessed by now that we enjoy our trips to Vegas, even though we are an online roulette guide.

We´ve stayed in quite a few hotels in this desert town at both ends of the scale- 5 star venues like the Venetian, the Encore Casino (One of Wynn’s) and the Bellagio, as well as place down town. We´ve also stayed at the Luxor, which we´d put somewhere in the middle of that scale.

It´s on the Strip, but it´s more bright and brash than some of the newer casinos that have sprung up around it (well there is an enormous Sphynx just outside the front door!) The Luxor has gone for more of the entertainment end of the market (Studio City Macau has copied this strategy in the Asian gambling capital- time will tell if it was a good bet).

But that means it´s also pretty good value- we wouldn´t exactly say it´s cheap (especially when Vegas is busy), but you do get good value for money here with its buffets and large rooms. And the pool area is big. When you´re in Las Vegas, you may as well get in to it and stay in a hotel that´s shaped like an ancient Egyptian pyramid!

You´ll find the Luxor at the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. It´s next to the Mandalay Bay Casino to the south and the Excalibur to the north. They are all connected by free express and trams. All of the casinos are owned and run by the Mandalay Resort Group. Like the Bellagio, this hotel also featured in the Hangover- the smash hit movie about a bunch of guys who head to Vegas for a disastrous stag evening. They lose the groom.

We found the staff to be friendly, we liked the breakfast (which is also top of our criteria list for hotels) and we got a great deal.

The Luxor Las Vegas is owned and run by MGM Resorts. There are more than 2,000 slot machines and 87 table games on the casino floor- plenty of action, and of course you are on the Strip (albeit at one end of it), so it´s easy to walk along to the other casinos.

Playing Roulette at the Luxor Casino

Luxor Gambling Lessons Games

Most of the roulette tables we found on the floor were American roulette tables with 2 zero pockets, which was the only drawback. However, if you are a novice, the Luxor is great as the casino staff offer free Craps, Black Jack and Roulette lessons every day on the casino floor.

The minimum bet is $10 on the tables, although this does vary depending on the time of day, and whether or not it is a weekend or not. If you want lower minimum bets, you´ll need to play on the automated roulette wheels (still with a croupier but you bet on an electronic screen), or play on the video roulette machines.

If you want to play single zero European roulette, you will need to head to the high limit area. That´s pretty typical of most Las Vegas casinos in our experience. It´s probably why craps is more popular in America!

If you are going to play on an American table, try and find one that plays the En Prison or Imprisonment Rule where your even money bets will ride over for an extra spin if the ball falls in to the zero pocket. This at least gets the house edge down from 5.2% to 2.63% and you are playing similar odds to a European table. We haven´t seen any tables that offer this in the Luxor, we have seen some in the MGM Grand and in the Wynn, plus we´ve seen it in the high roller´s section of the Mandalay Bay and Bellagio.

There are 4000 odd rooms with over 400 suites in the pyramid-shaped building and it´s accompanying towers.

The city of Luxor was a city in ancient in Egypt- you can guess the theme of the place!

The Luxor doubles up as a convention space, it has 4 swimming pools and whirlpools, a wedding chapel, Nurture Spa and Salon and lots of shops. If you fancy getting out, you can head over to the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino through The Shoppes at Mandalay Place, which is a sky bridge that´s also packed with shops like the Nike Golf store.

One pretty cool feature of this casino at night is the Luxor Sky Beam which beams out from the top of the pyramid and is the strongest light beam in the world. On a starry night, you can see the Sky Beam from over 250 miles away.

Summary

A great value hotel, with a good pool and big room- you get lots for your money here, particularly if you manage to get a good deal. Roulette players will be disappointed with the lack of European Roulette (they do have it in the high roller section), so we´d recommend heading down the Strip to look for single zero tables or at least tables that play the imprisonment Rule. A great base though, and you won´t be disappointed with the slots.
