Rainy Lake is managed with a walleye slot limit that returns big breeding size fish to the Lake and it is increasingly easy to catch a trophy walleye, snap a photo or two and release it back into the lake. Winter also provides a string bite from northern pike and crappie. Rainy Lake In 1994 we established a slot limit on this sprawling Canadian border lake. Anglers had to release all walleyes 17 to 25 inches long and could keep only one longer than 25 inches. The regulations were designed to protect the walleye population, which was recovering from years of overharvest by commercial and sport anglers. It’s early afternoon before we return, after releasing half a dozen walleye over the 18.1 to 23.6 inch slot size and keeping a few fish to eat. Scratching the surface of this immense system has been an ‘eye-opener and I wonder how many more walleye spots await discovery. . The 17-26' protected slot limit for walleye on the following Itasca County lakes has changed to a 20-24' protected slot with only one over 24' allowed: Moose, Split Hand, Swan, and Trout lakes.

At Campfire Island Camp, our spring opening is around mid-May, and all of our guests will agree that May- June is one of the premier times to target huge smallmouth bass and giant northern pike.Walleye are a structure-orientated fish, and during June they will be on the move as the water warms up and weed growth accelerates. By late-June and early-July, walleyes will start to gather on open-water weedlines rock reefs. These walleye are now in their summer pattern and do not seem to move from their chosen open-water structure for any length of time. It is not uncommon to find very large schools of walleye roaming these open-water structures, and this is when we begin angling for the huge walleyes that Rainy Lake is so famous for holding.

Many rock reefs will hold schools of 5-8 pound walleye. By mid-August, the bigger walleye get very aggressive; the schools are huge and right up to the end of September, it is not uncommon to find a feeding school of big walleye that gives fishermen the opportunity to catch many walleye in the 9-12 pound range one right after the other.
